Firm's Attorneys Receive Volunteer of the Year Award

Steven D. Archer and Hernaldo J. Baltodano, attorneys in the Los Angeles office of the national law firm of Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P., were the recipients of this year's "Volunteer of the Year Award" from Public Counsel.
Mr. Archer received the honor for his work with the Homelessness Prevention Law Project team with which he spent over 200 hundred hours investigating, litigating and resolving a series of hospital and medical transport company patient-dumping cases arising out of the discharge, transportation and abandonment of homeless and/or uninsured medical and psychiatric patients in Skid Row. According to Public Counsel, the Homelessness Prevention Law Project strives to reduce the number of homeless individuals in the community by focusing on the needs of populations that are at high risk of becoming chronically homeless.
Mr. Baltodano received his award for his work with the Children's Rights Project, specifically for assisting a family adopt a severely developmentally disabled child and resolving alleged Social Security Administration overpayments. Mr. Baltodano also pursued and obtained various services and support for the family in order to prevent the adopted child from being institutionalized. The Children's Rights Project works to empower low-income children -- particularly disabled children -- meet their wide range of needs in civil matters, while providing free legal and other advocacy services in disputes with various government agencies. Last year, Mr. Baltodano spent more than 200 hundred hours on his work for the Children's Rights Project.
The awards were presented on April 14, 2009 at Public Counsel's 10th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Celebration.
According to its web site, Public Counsel is dedicated to advancing equal justice under law by delivering free legal and social services to the most vulnerable members of the community, including abused and abandoned children, homeless families and veterans, senior citizens, victims of consumer fraud and nonprofit organizations serving low-income communities.
Mr. Archer practices in the areas of consumer class actions, mass tort, catastrophic personal injury, wrongful death and medical and professional malpractice. Mr. Baltodano's practice concentrates on the areas of employment litigation and complex class action defense - particularly wage and hour class action defense.
